You know that moment when the walk is over, you open the car door and realise just how muddy those paws are? Autumn has arrived. Lovely walks, damp ears and a towel that never seems quite clean again.
Your dog does not need to come home spotless. A little care afterwards can help keep them comfortable, and it need not mean a full bath every evening.
Start with the soggy bits
Have a gentle look at paws, legs and underneath the tummy. Remove loose leaves and surface dirt, towel-dry the wet areas and keep your dog warm while they dry. Give them a moment to settle if they have had enough excitement for one outing.
If you notice soreness, persistent licking or a change in how they walk, that is a conversation for your vet. We can help with the coat, but those signs need more than a tidy-up.
Brushing should feel manageable
You do not need a cupboard full of brushes. You need the right one for your dog, and a routine you can actually keep up. Short coats need attention too, while longer coats generally need more frequent brushing.
Not sure whether your brush is doing the job? Bring it along to your next appointment and ask us. We would much rather talk it through with you than have you guessing at home.
Choose a quiet moment and work gently. If a knot will not shift, stop rather than pulling at it. Please leave tight mats for us to assess instead of reaching for the scissors. They can sit very close to the skin.
Do we really need another bath?
Not always. A couple of muddy paws are a different job from a dog who has rolled in something you would rather not identify. Look at what actually needs cleaning before committing yourself, and your bathroom, to the full wash.
When a bath is needed, use a dog shampoo, rinse it out thoroughly and dry your dog properly. If the coat is already matted, ask for advice before bathing.
Let us help you find a routine
Tell us what life with your dog is like. Daily muddy walks? A longer coat you love but struggle to brush? There is no judgement. Coat type, the finish you want and what you can manage between visits all help us plan the next groom together.
You can see our grooming services or book your next visit at Mickleover, Allestree or Wirksworth. Come as you are, muddy paws included.
