Same walk again? Sometimes it is lovely to turn a different way, give your dog a few new smells to investigate and get yourself out of the usual routine too. There is no need to plan a huge hike. A gentle wander with plenty of stops counts.
If you are looking for somewhere around Derby, Allestree, Darley and Markeaton parks each offer something a little different. Pack the towel before you go. You might be glad you did.
Allestree Park: for dogs who like to take their time
Woodland, grassland and lakeside paths make Allestree Park a lovely option for a varied walk. If your dog likes to inspect every leaf, this is a day to let them set a slower pace. The nature trails include stone tracks and muddy ground, so save your clean trainers for another day.
There are car parks at Burley Hill and Woodland Road. Highland cattle may graze in winter, so look out for signs, give them space and keep your dog close. You can find the route details on the Allestree Park visitor page.
Darley Park: a riverside wander
Fancy some time beside the water? Darley Park sits along the River Derwent, within walking distance of the city centre. You can keep your outing short or take a little longer. There is no prize for covering the most miles, especially if your dog would rather stop and sniff.
Not all of the park has paths. After heavy rain, take care with the ground and keep away from flooded areas and the river’s edge. If you need a surfaced route, have a look at Darley Park’s access information first.
Markeaton Park: did somebody say coffee?
A walk for the dog and the possibility of a coffee for you sounds like a fair arrangement. The Orangery Café at Markeaton is listed as dog friendly, so it is worth checking its opening times if a stop is part of your plan.
Have a look at the park information and café details before you go. Follow the signs around attractions and play areas, as dogs cannot go into every part of the park.
A little preparation, then enjoy yourselves
Lead, water, poo bags, towel. Nothing fancy, just the things that make getting out and getting home easier. The Derby Parks FAQs cover the general rules, and signs on the day will flag any local restrictions.
Back with muddy paws? Our after-walk coat-care tips will help you get your dog comfortable again. And when it is time for a proper tidy-up, we are here in Mickleover, Allestree and Wirksworth. No apology needed for a dog who has enjoyed their walk.
